Dedication of the
Pre-K Classroom |
On Tuesday evening October
19, 2004, the
youngest children to ever attend our school graced the brand new stage and sang
"Fall" and "Tishrei" songs, to a room full of admiring spectators. All were
present for one excellent and exciting reason – for the dedication of the brand
new Pre-K classroom. Mrs. Anne Lupkin, President of the Solomon Schechter School
of Queens opened up the evening by sharing a moving tribute to her late and dear
friend, Sonja Spiel z"l, in whose memory her husband, Norton Spiel financed the
building of the pre-K room. Sonja Spiel was an active member of the SSSQ PTA and
school community, while her four sons attended this school, and for many years
after they graduated. Her son spoke of his difficulty understanding why his
mother stayed actively involved in Schechter when she no longer had children
attending the school. Now, as an adult and as a parent, he finally understands
why his mother had such a strong appreciation for this unique school and why she
continued dedicating her time to help make it a better and stronger place. Mr.
Norton Spiel was deeply touched when the children of the Pre-K presented him
with an album full of pictures they had made for him in their first few weeks of
school.
Over dinner, parents of the Pre-K students socialized and mingled with the Spiel
family and with the many members of the Board of Trustees, Board of Overseers,
and Board of Education, who were in attendance. It was also wonderful having so
many rabbis from the synagogues in our area whose congregants send children to
our school.
Rabbi Radler, of the Hillcrest Jewish Center, and the rabbi of the Spiel family
led the children in reciting the bracha and hanging of the Mezuzah. Also in
attendance were Rabbi Simckes of the Hollis Hills Jewish Center, Rabbi Futterman
of the Israel Center for Conservative Judaism, Rabbi Green of the Marathon
Jewish Center, and father of two of our students, Rabbi Pearl. "Hinei Ma Tov,
U’Ma Nayim," how pleasant and joyous it is when we can all join together for
such joyous occasions as the dedication of the Sonja Spiel Pre Kindergarten at
the Solomon Schechter School.
