A Fiddler on the Roof…
Sounds crazy, no? But in our little
village of SSSQ, a Fiddler was on our roof on Tuesday, May 18th,
at two outstanding performances. Anatevka came right to Flushing, thanks
to the talent and hard work of our very own Solomon Schechter School of
Queens Drama Club. Under the able tutelage of co-directors, Robbin
Gosset and Carol Gans, 29 actors and actresses from grades kindergarten
to sixth swept the audience back in time to turn-of-the-20th-century
Russia, when Eastern European Jewry underwent monumental transformation,
from the shtetl to Communism, assimilation, and emigration. Through the
story of Tevye the milkman, his family and neighbors, the audience
watched that world transform before their eyes.
The Drama Club has been meeting and rehearsing on
Monday afternoons all year long. Through drama, children grow in so many
ways. Working up the courage to perform before a large crowd is a
wonderful learning experience. Learning to project one’s voice before
an audience is a skill that will last a lifetime. The need to memorize
lines, stage directions, and dance steps, to follow directions and work
as a team, are all skills that develop while participating in live
theatre. After the final performance of "Fiddler," the members
of the SSSQ cast and crew were all very proud of themselves, and rightly
so. They did a magnificent job and all deserve our praise. For those of
you who did not attend Tuesday’s performances, you really missed out.
But never fear, it sounds like Ms. Gossett and Ms. Gans are planning on
staging a new production next year. Mazal Tov to them both. Mazal Tov to
the seventh and eighth grade set designers, choreographers, and stage
hands. Mazal Tov to all of the actors and actresses. And Mazal Tov to
their devoted parents. If you run into any of these people, thank them
for bringing the spark and light of theatre to our school community. |
