SOLOMON SCHECHTER SCHOOL OF QUEENS |
|
Our History The Solomon Schechter School of Queens was established in 1956 by dynamic visionaries comprised of leaders in the Conservative Synagogue Movement of Central Queens. Its organization came in response to a compelling need for a day school where children could receive an education oriented to the progressive philosophy of Conservative Judaism. In retrospect we see this school as an inspiring saga of struggle and achievement. One of the most appropriate decisions made at an early meeting of the group planning the school was to name it for the guiding light of Conservative Judaism, Solomon Schechter. It was to dramatize the faith that this school would be an extension of the institutions associated with Conservative Judaism. Our school began with twenty-one students in quarters offered it by the Rego Park Jewish Center. Slowly, but surely, the school began to grow. Parents were thrilled with the progress registered by their children in Judaic as well as general studies. Before long the school required additional facilities and the Hillcrest Jewish Center placed its old building at the school's disposal. It was difficult to conduct the school in two buildings so remote from each other. The staff worked tirelessly with rare determination and dedication and the standards of scholastic achievement continued to rise impressively. In 1959 the NYS Board of Regents awarded the SSSQ an absolute charter. To meet the urgent need of providing adequate facilities under one roof in 1963 our School embarked upon an ambitious building program. The beautiful new SSSQ building on Parsons Boulevard was completed and dedicated in the Fall of 1965. We are proud to say that our current student enrollment now exceeds 380. Children from every community in central Queens are represented in our student body. The success of our School has inspired the creation of 72 Conservative Jewish Day Schools in the United States and Canada that are now part of the Solomon Schechter Day School Movement officially sponsored by the United Synagogue of America. We look upon the creation of these Solomon Schechter Schools as one of the most significant developments in the perpetuation of Judaism. We salute the pioneers who had the vision and the courage to undertake the creation of our School, and the benefactors for their exemplary generosity that translated this dream into a glorious reality.
