A. Parent Teacher Association

The PTA works to enhance the close knit nature of the school, raises most needed funds for school projects, and enlists the help of parent volunteers for a variety of programs. Family membership is included in the tuition. Active membership allows many opportunities to make a lasting contribution to the students and the school, as well as developing long lasting relationships with other parents and members of the Schechter family.

B. Parent-School Communication

Parents are encouraged to attend important school functions, meetings, parades, and programs. Parents are welcome to visit the school in order to inquire about their child's progress or to resolve questions or problems. Parents are asked to call the office to arrange an appointment with the teacher or principal, so as not to interfere with class learning.

C. Orientation for Parents

Each year an orientation meeting is scheduled for parents to enable parents and teachers to meet. It gives parents a chance to familiarize themselves with the important aspects of the school program. Check the school calendar for dates of orientation.

D. Written Progress Reports

Report cards are distributed three times during the year (late fall, early spring, and end of the year) to inform parents of their children's work and progress. Approximately six weeks prior to distribution of each of the report cards, written reports of progress are mailed home to advise parents of children's areas of strength and those in need of additional attention. Parents are asked to review all written reports and take the appropriate action. They are asked to sign report cards and return them to their child's teachers in a timely fashion. Questions concerning report cards can be dealt with at Parent-Teacher conferences or at a later date by appointment.

The school has the right to withhold report cards and Parent-Teacher conferences from children whose family's tuition is past due.

E. Parent-Teacher Conferences

Conferences with parents are scheduled following the first and second report cards. Please refer to the school calendar.  Teachers and/or administration may deem it necessary to request a meeting with parents, to be scheduled at a mutually convenient time.

F. Transportation

Walking: Children who walk home regularly should know the route, have a key, and the school should be informed of this. Whenever a child is given permission to walk from school the teacher must receive a note to this effect.

School Bus: Yellow school buses are provided by the New York City Board of Education to children who live within a five mile radius of the school - if they are in Kg-2 and live more than half a mile away, or they are in grades 3-6 and live more than one mile away. STUDENTS IN GRADES 7-8 ARE NOT PERMITTED TO RIDE YELLOW SCHOOL BUSES.

Bus routes, stops and time schedules are determined by the New York City Board of Education. Please know your child's bus number, bus stop, time of pick-up and drop-off. It is important to be at the bus stop on time.

For safety reasons shouting, standing, or other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Bus service may be denied to children who persist in such behavior.

Children may not change their bus assignments. Requests for a one time change to visit a friend may not be honored.

In the event that a bus is late in arriving to pick up children at school, children may be permitted to call home so that parents may pick them up. Information about delays of 20 minutes or more will be announced on the school's voice mail at (718) 59l-9800.

During early Friday dismissal and half days (as per calendar) bus transportation is provided at the time of dismissal. For no bus days please see calendar. For additional no bus days, notices will be sent home with your child.

Public Transportation: Children who live more than one mile and cannot use school bus service, may obtain reduced fare passes for use on public transportation.

Car: Parents who transport their children to school must drop them off at the 76th Rd. entrance. Children may not be dropped off before 7:30 a.m. since there is no one in the building to guarantee their safety.

Parents who pick up their children may not park adjacent to the school on Parsons and 76th Rd., in the bus loading zone. Parents who obstruct traffic by doing so, will be cited by the Traffic Violations Department.

All parents who pick up children must wait outside the building (76th Rd. entrance) to assure that stairways and exits are kept clear. No parent is allowed in the school building between 2:45 p.m. and dismissal.
